Tips for Flying and Traveling With Dogs and Other Pets

Traveling with Your Dog or PetSome pet owners will not take a trip if their dog cannot go with them. However, a poorly planned trip can stress both you and your pet out. No person or animal enjoys being miserable while on a trip or vacation. We have put some helpful tips together to make sure that everyone has a comfortable and save trip.

Let’s start by talking about your dog collar. A nice comfortable collar is a must for all dogs and it should include a tag that has your name and phone number in case your dog becomes separated from you. If you are going to be walking your pet at dawn or dusk, you might want to get a Light Emitting Diode Dog Collar from Yippr.com so that motorists can see you and your dog easily. The second thing is to make sure your canine companion is micro chipped. If someone does find your dog they can easily locate you by having the dog scanned.

Flying With Your Dog or Pets

Flying With PetsMost airlines allow small dogs to ride in an approved crate that will fit under your seat. Plane travel with larger animals is discouraged because the dog will have to be crated and separated from you. Regardless of your pets size, here are some tips that will help to keep your pet more comfortable and safe during the flight. If you must bring your pet along on the flight, here are a few suggestions to keep your pet safe while flying the friendly skies.
•Try to take a direct flight that will get you to your destination the quickest. This will greatly reduce stress on you and your dog. You have to remember that all things such as delays, bag handlers and turbulence can increase stress on you pet. The less stress your pet incurs helps to make things more pleasant for him or her.
• Make sure your dogs vaccinations are all updated and you have the documentation to prove it. It is also a good idea to take your pet to the veterinarian for a check up just to make sure there is not anything going on you are not seeing. If you are traveling outside of the United States you need to check if they have any special requirements necessary that you are not aware of. If your dog gets nervous or sick while traveling you will want to bring that to your veterinarians attention. The vet may prescribe some tranquilizers for your pet to reduce the stress.
•The crate for you dog should be big enough that they can stand up, turn around and lay down in comfortably. Also make sure some type of absorbent material lines the bottom in case you pet has an accident.. Also make sure to tie or tape some dry dog food on the outside of the pet carrier so the airline employee looking after you pet can feed them. Don’t forget the water. Always water your pet right before your flight takes off if possible. If you have a small collapsible dog water bowl clip it on the outside of the crate as well. Another thing you can do is freeze a small bowl of water the night before your flight. Then place it inside the carrier prior to the flight and it should be melted by the time your dog needs a drink. Never put a lock on the carrier. If there is some type of emergency the airline may need to get your pet out of the carrier.
• Most quality pet carriers has an I.D. tag attached to them. Make sure your tag is filled out with your Name, Phone Number, destination and a picture of your pet if possible. Also keep a good picture of your pet on your phone in case you need to show it to the airline personnel.
• If your pet is larger and has to travel in the cargo hold be sure you know something special about your dog crate (has pink tape on the top etc.). If for some reason your flight is delayed do not be shy about asking an airline employee if he or she could check on your pet.

Traveling by Car With Dogs or Pets

Traveling In The Car With Your DogWhen taking a road trip with your pet double check that you have all the necessary items needed to make the trip as enjoyable as possible. The following preparation and tips will make things smoother for you and your pet.
• If you don’t take you pet on short trips regularly start by taking them with you whenever you can. This can be something as simple as taking your pet with you to get gas or drop the kids off at school. If you are traveling out of state ask your vet what other requirements may need to be met. Take proof of all vaccinations your pet has had.
• If you are planning on putting your pet in a crate while you are on the road, put him or her in the crate for short intervals prior to the trip if they are not used to being confined. Make sure the crate is large enough for the animal to lay down in, stand, sit and turn around in. Your pet will need to re-adjust their position just as we do during long trips. Ensure that the crate is secure in the vehicle so it doesn’t slide around or tip over. Also line the bottom of the crate with some type of absorbent material in case your pet gets sick or has an accident. If you decide not to use a crate you may want to also get one of these Dog Car Seat Protector Covers from Yippr to protect your car seat. They protect your seat from being getting claw marks and hair on them. They also help in case your pet has an accident, drools or becomes sick during the trip.
• Pack a bag for your pet. Be sure to take plenty of food and water, including bowls to feed and water with. Other things to pack are; a leash, waste retrieval and disposal bags, any medications, grooming supplies, vaccination records and a first aid kit.. If at all possible don’t feed or water your pet while traveling as it could upset their stomach and make them sick while moving. If your pet is used to a feeding schedule try to plan your fuel stops etc. based on this schedule and allow time for him or her stretch their legs and have a potty break. If you pet has a favorite toy, blanket or pillow make sure to take this along because it can be very comforting to them.
• Do not leave you pet unattended in the vehicle for any extended period. If it is hot you have to remember that the temperature will become much higher inside of the vehicle. When the weather is cold this can make your pet miserable if they are not used to colder temperatures. Whenever possible try to keep the interior of your vehicle a moderate temperature that you pet is used to, especially for inside dogs.

Hopefully these tips has helped you and you are welcome to share this article but please credit our effort and keep all other credits in place.

8 Things You Should Know Before Flying With your Dog

Going on a trip with your dog to another city is not easy. There are many things you should be prepared for if you are flying with your dog. Here are some tips you should consider.

Size of the dog

The size of your dog must be just right to fit him under the seat of the airplane. The airlines have very strict regulations regarding the size of the pet carriers. Your dog must weigh 15 pounds of less to fit under the seat.

Your dog must be well trained

Some airlines require that your dog must be well trained so that they don’t suffer from any kind of anxiety during the flight. If you think your dog may be frightened to fly, then it’s better to arrange a pet sitter for him and leave him in your house or at a boarding place.

Pack the necessary things

You should make sure that you carry enough food, toys, etc. so that your dog can survive for a few days. You should bring non-spill water carrier. You should bring bone or toys to keep your dog occupied during the flight.

Reserve a place for your dog in advance

Most airlines allow only limited number of dogs to fly in-cabin. So, you should book space for your dog in advance. You might have to pay extra fees for taking your dog inside the cabin.

Get health certificate from the vet

Some airlines specifically mention that your dog must have a health certificate. But if the airline you are traveling with doesn’t say so, it is wise to take a health certificate from the vet anyway. The health certificate is a proof that your pet is in good health condition and won’t cause any harm to others.

Limit water intake

You should make sure that you don’t give the dog too much water to drink. Otherwise, he will create a problem during the flight. You should also ensure that the dog doesn’t suffer from dehydration.

Be prepared that your dog will go through security check

The dog will go through security check along with you. The dog carrier has to go through the conveyor belt for a security check as well.

Use of sedative should be the last resort

If the dog is nervous and there is a chance that he might become anxious, then only you should give him a sedative. You should take the advice from a veterinarian. You should use sedatives with caution as they might cause breathing and other problems.

If you follow these tips, you will be able to have a comfortable and safe journey with your pet. You will have a wonderful experience going to a new place with your pet.
